Nature Echo

Xie Rong (Echo Morgan) subverts notions of "Chineseness" and femininity through provocative art. Using her body as a canvas, she creates action paintings and portraits with materials like Chinese ink, red lipstick, coal, chlorophyll, and breast milk. Her work, rooted in personal experience, explores themes like the body politic and ecofeminism, merging Eastern philosophy with Fluxus and action art to inspire reflection and dialogue.

Blending English narration with Chinese folk songs, Xie challenges perceptions of beauty, power, and vulnerability. Trained at Sichuan Fine Arts Institute High School, Central Saint Martins, and the Royal College of Art, she collaborates with photographer Jamie Baker to produce unique prints that combine painting and mark-making on photographs. Her acclaimed works are held in public collections, including The Staatliche Museum in Berlin, The Crow Museum in Texas, and Kensington Palace in London.

Xie also creates intimate films and collaborates with musicians and movement artists for immersive storytelling. She views art as a healing force in communities. Her accolades include the Aesthetica Art Prize (2014) and the Chinese Arts Now Scratch Award (2019). A senior lecturer at Chelsea College of Art, she has presented her work globally, including at Sotheby’s Institute and the College Art Association.
