With her background in both Classical and traditional Chinese percussion, Beibei Wang brings her characteristic “high energy virtuosity” (Wall Street Journal) to performances of diverse repertoire.
As a soloist, she has performed around the world with orchestras such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Mahler Chamber Orchestra, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, New Japan Philharmonic, and the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and has appeared on the world’s most prestigious stages, including the Barbican Centre, Elbphilharmonie, and Southbank Centre.
Beibei has had a long-term collaboration with composer and conductor Tan Dun, featuring as soloist for performances of Tan’s Organic Music Trilogy percussion concerti worldwide. Beibei premiered ‘Earth Concerto’ at Grafenegg Festival and performed ‘Tears of Nature’ concerto with the BBC Concert Orchestra on their 2018 six-city China tour with conductor Barry Wordsworth.
Her unique background brings her to a range of multi-disciplinary projects ranging from performances of contemporary classics and new commissions with RPS-award winning ensemble Manchester Collective, to dance projects with groups such as House of Absolute and Philharmonia, and international tours with Aakash Odedra Company’s “Samsara’ following its 2022 UK premiere at Edinburgh International Festival.
In recent years, Beibei has brought her cross-cultural background into original compositions. In 2023, she premiered her music theatre piece “WuXing 五行” for chamber ensemble and multimedia at LSO St Luke’s with Tangram and later in the year, performed the piece’s Asia premiere at the Grand Theatre of China in Shanghai. Beibei’s other compositions draw inspiration from Chinese folk culture and traditions. Works such as her 2022 piece ‘JiuGe’ draw on her experiences at the Lunar New Year family dinner table, and her percussion duet “Double Happiness” subverts a traditional wedding scene with playful and improvisatory cymbals and gongs. Beibei performed her arrangement of Tan Dun’s ‘Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon’ concerto for percussion ensemble and cello in Hamburg’s Laeiszhalle in winter 2022, and her commissions include music for Shanghai, London and Paris Fashion Weeks, award-winning short film scores, and multimedia music theatre pieces. Beibei is a founding member of Tangram.
